Combating the Cinderella Syndrome

Self pity is a dangerous thing.
I can often relate to how the fictional Cinderella must have felt staying home when everyone else prepared themselves for, got excited about, and left for the ball without her.

Because of multiple chemical illness, I am extremely limited on where I can go (and whom and what I can allow into my home).  Even exposure to small amounts of perfume, hairspray, cologne and aftershave, laundry detergent and fabric softeners, antiperspirants and deodorants, hand lotion, lip balm, chemicals in stores, incandescent lights, mold spores, cleaning chemicals, air fresheners, hot asphalt, formaldehyde (in funeral homes), pesticides, herbicides, lawn chemicals, pool chemicals, bleach, paint fumes, new building materials, inks, scented candles, and even natural essential oils etc. can cause a person with MCSI (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Illness or Syndrome MCSS) MAJOR problems. One exposure can set us back days or even weeks.  Most people do not understand what it is like and how big a deal it can be to have a reaction - difficulty breathing (even having the esophagus swell shut in some instances), dizziness, disorientation, seizures, rashes, muscle pain, headaches, exhaustion, stomach pain, anxiety attacks, heart palpitations, brain fog, visual disturbances and more are some of the consequences that can manifest because of exposure. (Not all of these are necessarily experienced every time or by every individual).

Some say chemical sensitive people are like canaries.  These small yellow birds were used in coal mines to indicate when there were high levels of toxic gases in the mine.  The canary would be effected first (like the MCSS patient) before humans and would stop singing as he died.  This would alert the miners of danger so they could get out of the mine before it was too late.

The unnatural chemicals around us actually effect all of us.  If your liver is healthy, your body may be able to filter and handle the invader - perhaps without you even noticing it.  In MCSI individuals, the liver, kidneys and lungs may be compromised and not able to filter out the toxins very well.  The chemicals, molds, etc. enter and cannot be as easily eliminated as they are in a healthy person.  Since the poisons cannot leave as rapidly as they should, they circulate through the blood and can even be stored in the body's fat, tissues and ultimately, the organs.  This has a negative effect and manifests in very unpleasant and potentially dangerous ways.

So what can a MCSI individual do?  Isn't there a pill he can take?  He/she can work on cleansing the eliminative channels, avoid exposure to toxins as much as possible, build up the body's immune system, be very careful about diet, use air purifiers, charcoal masks, natural fabrics, etc.  There is no pill to take as a cure.  In fact, the chemicals in drugs usually cause even bigger problems. (The above two paragraphs are only a simplified description and my own thoughts as a result of study - not to be taken as medical advice). Perhaps it will help some of you relate to those you know who suffer with this malady.  Many people are frustrated and think "It's all in your head", "You have to be overreacting because it doesn't bother me", "It can't be that big of a deal that I forgot and wore perfume", "Why can't you just toughen up?", "I'm not about to change my lifestyle just because you don't like the smell",etc . The MCSI person often loses friends and can be rejected by others because of being misunderstood and because of the necessary isolation.

My family has been celebrating Christmas with relatives out of town the past two days.  I am home... alone...again.  Sometimes these days aren't so bad...peace, quiet, rest and time alone with the LORD.  Other times I feel sad, whiney, self pitious.  How many parties, reunions,  baby showers, weddings, conferences, holidays, and picnics (charcoal, sunscreen and bug spray are unbelievably bad) have I missed out on?  Too many, far too many.  I grieve for my husband, my children and for myself.  It gets depressing at times.

So what to do to keep the right heart attitude?

First - I must turn to the WORD of GOD.  That is truly where strength, peace, joy is found.  I thank God that I have been mercifully driven to my Saviour so many times over the years.  It is sweet to fellowship with him.  I am actually not home alone.  He promised to NEVER leave me nor forsake me. (Hebrews 13:5)  I can rejoice in that.  When I really feel low, I can read the Psalms and cry with David and the other writers, and be reassured that God really does understand my struggles.

Second - I can praise God for who He is and what He has done for me.  I have a hymnal that is full of rich songs of praise and thanks that I can offer.  Scripture talks about the "sacrifice of praise" ( Hebrews 13:15  By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.), and I am grateful I have learned something of what that means.  There is always more to learn.  I do not always feel like doing these things. Sometimes I don't have the strength.  I know God has the answers, and that no where else but God will there truly be any lasting joy or peace.

Third - I can thank God for what I do have.  It is easy to focus on what I cannot do, my limitations, problems, sorrows, pain.  Some days I have to force myself to write down and say out loud to God, a list of things to thank him for.

Fourth - I can pray.  I am so privileged because of what Jesus did for me, to be able to approach the throne of glory - God Almighty, in prayer. He understands completely.   Romans 8:26  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.   He knows how I feel, where I am misunderstood, how the pain is effecting me, how difficult it is to accomplish certain things...

See, I feel better already:)

I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday season.  Thanks for listening.

Oh, do you want to know the end of the story?   I am certainly not perfect or sinless, but I have been saved by God's grace, and he has made me acceptable in his son.  Jesus is called THE PRINCE OF PEACE (Isaiah 9:6), and HE has given me a new life to live, both now and in eternity.  I thank God that the life he offers is even better than any "happily ever after" imaginable!

Familiar Carol, New Lyrics

Oh Jesus Christ! Oh Jesus Christ!
He is the only Saviour.
Oh Jesus Christ! Oh Jesus Christ!
He is the only Saviour.
He is still God yet became a man,
Born to fulfill salvation’s plan,
Oh Jesus Christ! Oh Jesus Christ!
He is the only Saviour.

Oh come to Christ! Oh come to Christ!
For He alone can save you,
Oh come to Christ! Oh come to Christ!
For He alone can save you,
Upon a cruel cross He died
That you may now be justified,
Oh come to Christ! Oh come to Christ!
For He alone can save you,

Oh trust in Christ! Oh trust in Christ!
He is the way to heaven.
Oh trust in Christ! Oh trust in Christ!
He is the way to heaven.
His blood can cleanse your from your sin,
And give you righteousness within.
Oh trust in Christ! Oh trust in Christ!
He is the way to heaven.

Oh worship Christ! Oh worship Christ!
He’s powerful and holy.
Oh worship Christ! Oh worship Christ!
He’s powerful and holy.
Fall on your knees; oh hide your face,
Cry out to Him who saves by grace.
Oh worship Christ! Oh worship Christ!
He’s powerful and holy.

Oh follow Christ! Oh follow Christ!
The way to joy is Jesus!
Oh follow Christ! Oh follow Christ!
The way to joy is Jesus!
Not only does Christ save from hell,
But strengthens us through life as well.
Oh follow Christ! Oh follow Christ!
The way to joy is Jesus!

Celebrating Will Be Difficult For Many

Those of us who have been adopted into the family of God have a great deal to live for each day.
I hesitate to post this so close to Christmas, because we all want to be happy celebrating with family etc., but I can't help but think about those whose hurts are magnified during the Christmas/New Year season. The pain of grief and loneliness this time of year weighs heavily on many.

*I think of my cousin whose 23 year old son was killed by a drunk driver the day after Thanksgiving last year.

*I think of the many people who have suffered miscarriage the past year who thought they would have a baby to hold this Christmas.

*I think of our neighbor who found his mother dead in her home last week.

*I think of the alcoholic/drug addict who has no hope or desire for anything but his addiction
...and the young family he left behind.  (And the dear grandmother who wrote to tell me of this hurt).

*I think of the young girl who aborted her own baby and needs the love and forgiveness only God can bring.  I also think of the now older woman who aborted her baby years ago, and is still living with the agony of her decision.

The list could go on.  I do not mean at all to put a damper on your festivities, but would ask that we all be sensitive to the fact that celebrating for some will be difficult - their difficult situations do not go away just because there is a holiday. True, we cannot solve the world's problems, but that does not mean that we cannot have an influence by showing God's love to someone in our life.  Perhaps praying for and/or doing some kindness toward a hurting person could move to the top of our "to do" list this week or next?

Christmas time should not be all about presents, eating whatever we want, pretty trees, dressing up, parties, programs, decorating...  True joy is found in a relationship with the risen Saviour who was born a baby in a manger and who grew, sinless, to do the will of his Heavenly Father - even obedience unto death on a cross.  That is surely reason to celebrate all year and good news that needs to be shared!

He Arose!

This may seem a strange title for a "Christmas" season post, but think about it.  If Christ Jesus had not risen from the grave, we would not have a way to be united with God.

This morning Victoria requested that we sing Christ Arose.  I love this song because it is a reminder of what our Saviour did for us on the cross and beyond.  It reminds Satan and his forces of evil what a huge mistake and blunder they made thinking they had killed the Lord of Glory.

1 Corinthians 2:7  But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
1 Corinthians 2:8  Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

He Arose!
Low in the grave He lay - Jesus, my Saviour!
Waiting the coming day - Jesus, my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o'er His foes:
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever with His saints to reign:
He a rose!  He a-rose!  Hallelujah! Christ a-rose!

Vainly they watch His bed - Jesus, my Savior!
Vainly they seal the dead - Jesus, my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o'er His foes:
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever with His saints to reign:
He a rose!  He a-rose!  Hallelujah! Christ a-rose!

Death can-not keep his prey - Jesus, my Saviour!
He tore the bars a-way - Jesus, my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o'er His foes:
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever with His saints to reign:
He a rose!  He a-rose!  Hallelujah! Christ a-rose!

Thinking on these thoughts this morning has kept me from discouragement about how I am feeling and what problems my body is having.  It is not a diversion.  My Saviour is my all.  I need to remind myself of the glorious truth of what He did and what I have been given!  I need to feed on His Word every day many times.

Nahum 1:7  The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

Winter Beauty

The winter white surrounding us here in west central Wisconsin has been incredible the past few days! This type of snow cover usually only lasts, with the right conditions, for a few hours in the morning. We have enjoyed this beauty now for several days.

The past two weeks have been

                                  emotionally,
                                                 spiritually,
                                                              and physically
                                                                                   difficult.

-Thyroid pressure which sometimes closes off my throat making it difficult to breathe and swallow.

-Extreme temperature regulation problems. I am so cold to the bone that it doesn't even seem to help to put on six wool blankets with a heating pad while drinking hot tea etc. Then I have the opposite with the hot sweating bouts. At times there seems no in between.

-Severe, painful bloating...digestive issues...

-Pain all over my body. My muscles seem to cramp up with no relaxing. “Tailbone” area pain is excruciating. It hurts to move but the longer I sit still, the harder it is to move.

-Headaches, jaw pain, incessant tinnitus.

-Lymphatic stagnation. (painful)

-Exhaustion. I am sleeping 12-14 hours a day.

I am working with a Dr. on these issues but progress is slow.
I guess that is enough (more than enough?) explanation. I won't try to explain the emotional/spiritual stuff.   I have to work hard to fight discouragement at times. I am so grateful I have a relationship with the ALMIGHTY and his living WORD to hold fast to! God's WORD is where I find peace, answers, encouragement, hope, purpose... I am weak. He is strong.

Giving Thanks to Whom?

We almost all celebrate Thanksgiving.  Whom are you thankful to on that day?  There must be a recipient of our thanks.   Some people thank the air?, the Indians, the earth, the NFL... but thanks and praise belong to GOD.

Psalm 106:1 Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Psalm 105:1 O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.

A good practice is to write a list (15-25 things daily) of things that you thank God for.  Try this each day between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Prayer Requests:
Most of the physical issues I have unfortunately have not improved much.  Please refer to the list given on 10-25-11.   In addition I have had further gall bladder, dental and neurological troubles/problems/challenges - whatever I should call them.  Holidays are usually tough emotionally because I am not able to be with family.  I thank God that although I have been very much fighting this virus, I have not come down with it full blown like the kids did.   Please continue to pray for God's control in my heart and life, financial provision, job direction and opportunities for Gregg, my complete healing.  Thank YOU for your gift of prayer for me.

Have you ever had the LORD mercifully "wake you up" to get you back on track?  I have been struggling with a particular sin and could not seem to get control.  Of course God wants our change and control to come out of our love and relationship with him, not our own feeble efforts.

Last night God helped me see some ways I have been deceiving myself.  I am resolved to be "back on track" today.  PLEASE pray for me as my flesh is weak and I know it will be a struggle.  I am paying consequences of the sin - God does not take that away, but praise Him, he has taken away the eternal consequences of my sin (Romans 6:23 The wages of sin is death) by punishing his son on my behalf.  We are undeserving and the bible says Christ died for us while we were yet sinners, his enemies! Selah - pause, and think on that for a while.

I purpose to dwell on that today, rather than on difficult circumstances.  Thank you for praying for me and our family.

"I'd help if I knew what to do."

To date, three more down with the flu :( Keep praying. I have been fighting this virus. I am having some dental issues - pain. Fibromyalgia, arthritis, incision and hernia area pain up...high...
On to the "ways to help" post I promised.

First let me say please do not be insulted if I do not mention an idea you did for us. I probably just forgot. Also, I am not writing this to hint at expecting you to do anything... I am hoping this will be a post to help you think of ways to help others. I so often hear "I don't know what to do to help".
Even little things help a lot. Some are obvious - e-mail, snail mail (everyone I have asked says a handwritten note is more personal and they prefer them to computer notes), sending scripture verses, sending a taped message so they can hear your voice, flowers (don't forget pressed, planting outdoor bulbs, silk, potted and of course fresh wildflowers or florist type).

Food -
See sidebar for helpful links. Remember disposable dishes, paper plates etc. are super helpful.
Even after a crisis is over, a gift of groceries or fresh baked goods, a pre-cut vegetable tray, a fruit basket, crackers and cheese, a Thanksgiving turkey, etc. are a blessing. People seem to help the first week of a crisis but then back off. This is normal, but the family could still use help weeks or even months later.

Chores-
Things you can do to help in a practical way: scrub floors, clean bathrooms, do laundry, dishes, fix things, change the oil on their car, mow the lawn, shovel snow, change bed sheets, clean their refrigerator, help with garden (you know you have true friends when they are willing to come over and weed the garden :) ) or harvesting or animals - walk the dog etc. We even had friends take a few of our chickens and cook and can them and the broth for later!

Meals -
Aside from bringing a whole meal, you may want to later give a gift certificate to a grocery store or restaurant or to take the family out for a meal. Note: large families rarely get invited to someone's home for a meal and often cannot afford to take their whole family out to a restaurant, so it is a real treat when they do get invited somewhere.

Send a small gift-
Pay attention to what a person likes - look at their home, listen for them to mention a need. My in-laws are shining examples of doing this, bringing things to help others etc. Sometimes practical things mean the most in crisis or hardship. (new dishtowels, replacing a broken faucet, buying school supplies, clothes, stamps, slippers, etc.)

Transportation-
Offer to take them or their children somewhere - the park, a museum or event. Offer a ride to Dr. appointments, take the kids to piano lessons or run errands for the person.

Listen -
Offer a listening ear without always giving advice "It is better to give help than advice" It can be tiring to explain over and over again symptoms, reasons for decisions, what the doctors have said etc. Sometimes a person does want to talk about these things,  but she does not expect you to figure out the solution - she just needs a listening ear and some compassion. If the person home-schools, you can help by listening to their child read, drill flashcards, correct papers, play board games, take the children on a field trip, help them write a report, take the children out for P.E. (ice skating, biking, hiking etc)

Be creative -
I could give so many examples of neat things people have done for us. It is fun to come up with creative ways to bless someone and I am encouraged when I get ideas from watching others.
A friend brought me bubbles along with a sweet message and prayer. It was a beautiful, reuseable reminder of her friendship.
My sister brought supper to the hospital for Gregg and Eliya the night of surgery. She even brought a delicious bag of granola for their breakfast for the next morning.
An aloe vera plant for scar healing was an ingenious gift after surgery.
A chiropractic or massage gift certificate is helpful.
A music CD or special book or magazine is appreciated.
A get well banner created by my children awaited me when I got home from the hospital.
A tree or flowering bush or flowers planted in the yard is a nice reminder of someones care.
New sheets and towels are always a treat.
Gifts for other family members are an encouragement. The spouse and children in a family are stressed too and it helps for them to be remembered.

Prayer -
Remembering to pray for someone long term can be a challenge when we are so busy. Make notes to yourself, keep a prayer calendar, set up 3x5 cards with names and requests, put the persons photo on your refrigerator - do something to help you remember your commitment to pray. Remind the person that you are still praying for them. The person needs prayer and encouragement long after the critical period is over - especially when grieving or dealing with a chronic disease or illness or miscarriage. Remember later - it is rare but precious to receive help after everyone else seems to have forgotten.
Pray for their marriage. Crisis of any sort and chronic illness is a strain, and the enemy takes exhaustion, weakness etc. as an opportunity to pounce.

Money -
This is one area that a few people (some anonymous) have surprised us with. Gift cards, cash etc. to help with medical expenses, groceries etc. can help ease stress during a difficult time. Money is a gift especially appreciated by unemployed or underemployed peple these days. A spouse usually will have to miss work during a crisis, which often means days off with no pay. We are so thankful for the love others have shown us.

Notes:
Accepting help can be very difficult and humiliating for some of us. I have had to learn that God sometimes wants to use me to allow someone else to serve or to show his love to unbelievers. Remember not to judge someone if their house is a mess, the refrigerator hasn't been cleaned or organized, the laundry is piled up etc. It is humbling not to have done what is necessary and to accept help. Often we cannot repay people. I always pray that God will reward the people who help and love and care.

I know I have forgotten so many more ideas. Please feel free to share some in the comments if you think of more.

Thoughts on Caring During a Crisis

What I will share here was prompted in part by watching some friends of ours who are suffering - it is not at all meant as a reprimand to anyone reading this. You prayed for us and helped us and were sensitive to our needs when I went through surgery, and we are still so grateful. Often times when people are in crisis, others will say "I would help if I knew what to do". . I thought I would share some general ideas of "how to help" others who have suffered a death in the family (remember miscarriage is a death too), accident, surgery or other hospitalization, divorce, chronic illness, disability, broken bones etc. Keep in mind that people differ and situations differ even from day to day. Try to be sensitive to their needs even if things don't make sense to you. This is about helping them, not about you fulfilling an obligation or giving them what you think they need on your time table. Never be insulted if someone refuses a visit or says no to your help on a certain day. Be flexible. Be forgiving.

It is best if you do not burden the hurting family with more to think about during a crisis e.g. decisions, timing, their ideas about what you want them to do etc. Remember they are tired and dealing with a lot. Just step in and do what you can without burdening them further. Usually this means no long visits - just drop off the meal etc. If they need to talk, listen, but otherwise do not expect them to recap all the details of things for you. Making appointments, scheduling tests, dealing with the financial fallout, changing schedules, missing work, communicating with family and friends, making difficult decisions, researching health and medication and treatment options, dealing with pain and fear, grieving, (a death opens up a whole other realm of needs) getting nutrition and handling day to day living is already more than they can handle. Their brains are full working on all these things. If children are involved, the parents have a lot of work to do taking care of their needs, explaining things, calming fears, etc.

There are times when phone calls are not helpful because time and energy are limited. Please do not expect people in crisis to return your calls. If you want to let them know you care by phoning, but they do not answer, just leave a sincere message with no need to return the call. An offer to help call other friends or family for them is often a good way to help. Sometimes they may desperately need someone to talk to. In that case, BE THERE. Try to put your needs on hold for a short time so you can listen to them, help make decisions, etc. Remember that your friend is vulnerable right now. Never share with anyone else something that was shared with you in confidence.

I hope these ideas are helpful. We continue to be blessed by your prayers and care. Since this is post ended up longer than I expected, I will try to post my ideas about specific ways to help in the next week or two.

God's Ways Are Higher, Greater, Better...

Apparently there are still people benefitting from the information I am sharing here, so here is another post.

I am fighting a bacterial infection and have been on treatment for about a week so hopefully I will be feeling some relief soon. The rest of the "list" remains about the same with very high pain levels.

God is blessing us in many ways. We've been rearranging furniture a bit because someone blessed us with a diningroom table and chairs set. When we built this house we designed it to be able to be used for ministry/hospitality. With this new table we will be able to handle bigger families etc. Now I just need to get well enough to get past the chemical problems with people's colognes, laundry detergents, haircare products etc. A little energy and well being would help too:)

Our older girls are off tomorrow to help some friends from our church. Please pray for Mike and his family as they are struggling through some very serious health issues after an on the job accident that caused severe chemical burns internally and lung and liver damage.

I am so blessed that God has given our family many opportunities to learn through hardship. God has taught our children what it means to serve and they have gained valuable understanding and compassion through it all. God mercifully allows things into our lives that fit perfectly into his plan. He brings us to a place of seeing our need for him, and then changes and shapes us for his glory. His methods are often not what we would choose, but HIS WAYS are infinitely higher than ours. Aren't you glad he sees the whole picture? I am!

Transparency

Being transparent is not one of my strengths so it is with some difficulty that I share the following excerpt from my prayer journal this week.
"Here I am LORD in all my pain, weakness (both physical and soul).  I am not "up" for what today holds.  I need YOUR strength, Your will, Your purpose, Your hope...every day but I feel it keenly today.  I do not want to work on my body, healing, cleansing, juicing, Dr. appointments, researching, supplementing, suffering...I am so burned out after so many years and so many different tries at so many different approaches, therapies etc.  Pain is so bad I almost can't make myself get out of bed in the morning until my bladder can scream no longer.  It hurts to move, I can't straighten up, moving my hips to walk is unbelievably painful..."
All this is not new since surgery mind  you, it's just I don't usually share "details" of how I'm doing. So here's just a glimpse of a small piece of my puzzle.

Prayer Requests:
  • Clearer brain - ability to concentrate and set my mind on things above - some aspects of this have been worse since surgery
  • God's priorities - that I will use energy for His will and seek it with my whole heart
  • Gratitude - that I will thank God for the huge number of blessings I have and name them one by one
  • Praise - reminding myself constantly of who He is, what He has done, how much he loves us,  how much I need Him etc. (it's all in the Bible:)
  • Control - that I would have the self control and desire to eat right, stick to the diet and not overeat - that I would get nutrients form food and be able to digest and eliminate well.
  • Spinal/muscular - pain would decrease, strength would increase, bones would stay in place (especially ribs and spine)
  • Thyroid and adrenals would heal - hot, cold internal temperature fluctuations, much hair loss, weight gain continuing, hormonal imbalances, super on alert difficulty relaxing
Other - urethra nerves would heal
             arthritis pain would subside
teeth, jaw and TMJ pain would decrease so chewing is not so painful
itching would not be so incessant
extreme vertigo (dizziness like I never knew the world could spin so fast type)

I am sure this is more than most of you wanted to hear.  (And I could actually add a lot more).  Sometimes I'm not sure what I should share. Generally I feel it is better to suffer in silence but then you would have little idea of how to pray.  Sharing with some people actually brings more pain and misunderstanding - maybe those people will have stopped reading this blog by now.  One thing I've better learned through years of struggle is the "not having walked a mile in their shoes" concept that helps me realize that we really have no idea what someone elses life is truly like.  Everyone has to deal with their own set of physical limitations, personality strengths and weaknesses, relationship issues, financial stress, grief etc.  Most of the time we don't know even half of what they are faced with.  Everyone handles the challenges differently. I pray they have a relationship the the LORD so they have a strong hold on the truth.  Some do not even have that yet.

Thanks for your prayers.  Thanks for taking time to listen and care.  I challenge you to pray for someone (in addition to me) that you know is hurting.  Let them know you care in some small way this week.  It can make a huge difference.

Hello Everyone

This is a post for those asking how I am doing.  I am grateful to be alive.  I am extremely blessed by my family.  We have a roof over our heads and food on the table.  God is true, faithful and just.  He has given me eternal life not because I deserve it ( I do not) but because his son paid the highest price to free me from sin.  I rejoice that I can trust him!

Physically, well...PAIN is super high-back, hips, neck, shoulders, ribs.  Apparently my body is having great difficulty adjusting to the eleven+ pound off center mass being gone and the fascia difference etc.  My muscles are so extremely tight making chiropractic difficult because things will not move.  I am also not sleeping well again because of pain.  As God allows, I hope to make some massage appointments to try to help.  I have gained more weight:( and am still losing hair.  I have been overdoing (for me overdoing, not for a "normal" person) school, housework and organizing partly because it hurts so badly to lie down and to keep still.  The vertigo is extreme at times.  Concentration and focusing have been difficult.
After so many years of giving time, energy and money in trying to get well, I do get weary of being ill and in pain and having to constantly work on my body.  I tire of the severe dietary restrictions and having to "pay a price" when I deviate.

Thank you all for your prayers and for caring enough to keep checking this blog.  I am not sure how much longer I will keep it going.

Ellen

Random Post...

Pain.  Fibromyalgia.  Difficulty with nerve damage (?) in urethra still.  Inciscion red and swollen and sore.  Saw the doctor last week.  And no, I have not forgotten how to write a complete sentence. :^)  As you can tell, I'm not much in the mood to write but I know some of you check this blog to know how I am doing.  Thanks for your prayers for sleep.  I am exhausted this week but have had some improvement in sleep.  When I have the FreshAir purifier in my room on during the day to clean the air, I usually sleep better.  We have had some mold issues this fall so have been moving the machine around to different places as needed.
We are still in the midst of harvesting and putting up food for winter.  Gregg is preparing for a remodelers trade show on Saturday.   We sold the last puppy we had for sale this week.  The girls attended a wedding shower for a cousin. This is such a random post that is definitely not "good enough" to send but I am tired and our computer is going to the "doctor" in Chippewa tomorrow so will be gone for a while.

School has begun

Thanks to our adult children, the younger ones have been able to participate in a few field trips lately:

Civil War Sesquicentennial Event

Grape Arbor to help steam distill grape juice

Mondovi Air Show

Tour of Lakeside Food Processing Plant

I (Ellen) am not a write a blog kind of person.  I do believe though, that blogs are much more interesting when they include pictures...so here you go.

Gregg's parents were here for a few days working hard to help us.  They are amazing.  A friend has been helping us try to get our vehicles running which has also been a blessing.

I have had a couple of nights of a little more reasonable sleep which helps.  It  still hurts to bend over, turn over, lift etc. and I am still losing hair and gaining weight (thyroid issues) otherwise I guess symptoms are still about the same as the last post.

I am glad fall is here - I like cooler weather.

He is Worthy...

Thanks to all who are still checking this blog!   I, Ellen, am typing this entry which I actually started a while ago.
Here are some "highlights" of last week to give you an idea of where we are at:
  1. Gregg and two of the kids have been down with very bad intestinal diarrhea flu for days.
  2. Both vehicles broke down and are still having issues (we got stranded twice).
  3. We have been having lots of trouble with the dogs at night and getting out causing problems with neighbors during the day. (our female is in heat so that's attracting neighbor dogs which causes our dogs to bark all night to scare them away - NOT helpful for sleeping and healing!)
  4. We have been experiencing many computer and phone problems (this is the third time we have tried to do this blog post in the past week and a half).
  5. We have been attempting to keep up with preserving all the garden produce & pears, apples, elderberries and everything else that is ready and needs processing RIGHT NOW. (and of course all the dishes and mess that goes along with all that). Just so you don't think I am actually doing the canning, I should explain that I am just supervising and trying to cope with the extra noise, mess etc.:)
It is somewhat difficult to know how much information people want to know.  I do not want to complain about symptoms or problems. I do want to give glory and honor to God Almighty.  We appreciate your prayers and hope to give you ideas of how you can pray if you want to continue to bless us in that way.

So many of my health difficulties were present years before surgery and although the removal of the over eleven pound mass was a huge help, I am still struggling with a lot of issues. There is so much I want to do but can't.  Over the years I have had to learn time and time again how to give everything to God and be content in focusing on him and his will for each day - being thankful for WHATEVER he gives me or allows me to do or not do that day.

I am having difficulty with diet, digestion, bloating, weight gain, candida... I feel restless and tired and am not sleeping well... fibromyalgia, back pain, incision site, nerve and abdominal pain and jawbone, teeth and ear pain are up. I need prayer for the fruit of the Spirit to increase in me. It is amazing what major surgery does not only to your body but to your mind as well.  So... This is different that the other two blogposts that I typed and then lost...  I am afraid it is a bit negative :-(  It has been a rough two weeks.

As I walk with the KING OF KINGS, I am weak but purposefully praising and thanking him and reminding myself daily of his mercies.  I am so glad the surgery is over, the mass was benign, God worked out the timing, surgeon, hospital, and that my family, friends and church stood behind me.  God is providing and knows exactly what our needs are.  He is worthy of praise, honour, glory, dominion, power...  Let us praise him because of who he is, not just when circumstances are nice or we feel good.

God is faithful

God continues to answer prayers.  We thought we'd share (at the risk of not mentioning them all) a few of the creative things people have blessed us with during the past weeks:
-an aloe vera plant (great for healing scar tissue)
-organic grass-fed beef for the freezer (valuable nutrition)
-chia seeds (super antioxidants)
-bubbles, Bible verses and "seeds of hope"
-incredibly thoughtful meals and garden help
-school supplies and laundry help
-paper plates, forks, napkins (no dishwasher and mounds of canning season dishes make these gifts nice)

Ellen's pain is still high - nerves, muscle and tissue mending a large incision will take time says the Dr.  She is still having digestive, bowel and circulatory problems which were issues before surgery (partly because of the huge mass blockage) and will also take time to resolve.  Last week was a difficult week for her.

Please pray for good sleep (she has been having long, sleepless nights), digestive health (she is not digesting food in spite of dietary restriction, digestive enzymes etc.), proper healing of the many layers of stitches and tissues, muscle, fascia etc. (the doctor also repaired an umbilical hernia), pain level (surgery plus a displaced rib on the right side causing pain and problems), adrenal taxation from medication, pain, stress...

Everyone is still tired out at our house.  Gregg is still working part-time nights and during the day has been applying for jobs and phone interviewing and still driving the indoor air quality and mold inspection business forward in the midst of things.  He definitely needs a different, DAYTIME, higher paying job or for his business to become much more profitable.  Of course now he has hospital bills etc. to work out which also takes time and energy and causes extra stress.  Please remember to pray for God's strength for him too.

Thank you all for continuing to care and check this blog.  Healing is sometimes a slow process and some days can be discouraging with pain, etc..  We have so much to rejoice over and thank God for each day which keeps things in proper perspective.  Your prayers, help, gifts, friendship are so valuable, and we thank you.

Prayers, Pain and Praise

Thanks to everyone for your continued prayers and thoughts.  Mom's incision is looking better.  She is having internal pain still and digestion continues to be challenging.  Her body is still cleansing out the medications so she has headaches, muscle pain, nausea...  It will take a while for her body to adjust.  Thank you to all of you for your continuing prayers.  We praise God who is the Great Physician and Healer!

We have been so blessed by friends and family with groceries, meals, lawn mowing, cash gifts, garden help, cards etc.  Thank you all for your love and help!

Victoria took the picture of one of our 'volunteer' sunflowers that came up on it's own in the garden.

1 week post surgery update

Thank you all for your prayers!  God has answered in such miraculous ways.

Mom had her staples removed on Saturday.  She is still in lots of pain, is not sleeping well, is having trouble with medication side effects etc. so please continue to pray for her.

Friends and family have been awesome in helping with food, cards, garden help and more.  We are still all exhausted and having a difficult time trying to keep up with everything, so the help has been greatly appreciated.  It has helped also not to have to explain details of every thing to people individually.  We are still not really 'up to' visitors yet, but so appreciate your care and checking our blog!  :-)  We will try to continually keep you updated on her progress.

Home Sweet Home

We were hoping to come home yesterday, but Mom was too weak, so we ended up coming home today.  She is still very weak and in a lot of pain, but improving each day.

Progress despite lack of sleep ;-)

Mom is doing a bit better today.  Monday night was hard with no sleep for her (not much for Dad and me either).  Last night was much better and she was able to sleep a few hours.  She had some issues getting the pain meds to work for her, but that is doing a bit better now.  The doctor wants her walking as much as she can, so she has been walking around her room some and was even able to walk a little bit in the hall once.

We are still at the hospital, but there is a possiblity that she could come home later today (after 4:00), or she may need to stay one more night.

She is still weak and is hoping she can sleep today.  Dad and I are hoping we can catch a little sleep too as there hasn't been much for us either.

Thank you to everyone for their prayers and support!

Quick Update from the Hospital...

It was an early morning today and surgery was already underway by 8:00am.  By 9:00, the removed mass was off to be tested.

Praise GOD, contrary to the earlier blood tests, the removed mass was actually benign - huge, but benign!!!

God’s Word Brings Comfort

God’s Word Brings Comfort
I have eighteen 3x5 cards in my back pocket. They each contain a scripture passage that I have been committing to memory over recent months. Throughout the day I pull them out and work on a few of the newer ones and refresh my memory on a few of the older ones. They get jumbled around in a pretty random and changing order.
Last week, I pulled them out and just started reading them sequentially in the order that I found them. The first 8 of them seemed like an amazing, single message directly to me and to my family, as we contemplated the difficult path ahead. Here is what I read:
Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation [steadiness] be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. … For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; … For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. … Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. … Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee.
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
(Phil 4:4-7; 2Tim 1:7-8; Rom 8:18; Psa 46:1-3; Isa 41:10; Josh 1:9; Rom 8:28; Jer 32:17; Psa 27:14)

Consultatations, Options & Scheduling

Thank you all for your prayers. It has been a difficult week but God has been faithfully orchestrating travel, appointments, tests, doctors, etc. We met with two surgeons (and a host of support staff and technicians) over the last few days, and have a clear path at least to the point of surgery. Ellen is scheduled for surgery at 7:30 a.m. Monday, July 25.

The pre-operational appointments and testing have left Ellen quite exhausted (the rest of us are dragging too), but we are hopeful for a positive change soon.

Your continued prayer support is appreciated.

A Cancer Diagnosis

As most of you know, Ellen has had serious health struggles for a couple decades.  Although she has seen many MDs and specialists, we have not made adequate progress, and this last year has brought a big increase in physical pain. The greatest advances have been through alternative approaches, and recent efforts have increased strength paving the way for what is next.

July 14th, Ellen had a CT scan that showed a large ovarian mass 28x25x14cm (11" x 10" x 5.5") (about the size of a round watermelon or 2 to 3 laptop PCs).  The ovarian growth is pressing up on her lungs causing fluid build up there, clamping her colon and applying problematic pressure elsewhere as well.  Further tests indicated it to be cancerous.

We are looking at the options before us and are hopeful for a resolution soon.  Next steps include consultation with an gynecologic oncologist surgeon July 20th.  Your prayers for wisdom, discernment, strength, courage, healing, ... are appreciated.
